Seattle Seahawks: 5 Biggest free agency decisions this offseason
By Samuel Teets
What positions to improve
The Seahawks, like every team in the NFL, want to win Super Bowls as soon as possible. Seattle had a strong team this year and managed to go 10-6. That won’t be good enough though to compete with the best teams in the league. Obviously, Seattle could build their team through the draft again like they did the last time they made the Super Bowl, but free agency is also always an option.
On offense, the team needs to work on their pass blocking and get more aerial weapons. The Seahawks gave up 51 sacks in 2018, the eighth most in the NFL. If the quarterback was anyone other than Russell Wilson, that number would be much higher.
The Seahawks tight ends are good pass blockers and fit well with the run-focused scheme the team employed this year, but they don’t offer a serious threat in the passing game. In fact, their numbers are pretty abysmal compared to what other teams’ tight ends are able to produce.
On defense, Seattle needs to create more turnovers and improve their pass defense ranking. The Seahawks ranked 18th in interceptions this season. When the team won the Super Bowl half a decade ago, they led the league in interceptions.
They were the 17th best team against the pass this season. It’s hard to be a serious contender while ranking in the bottom half of the league in that category. The Seahawks also ranked first in the league in pass defense when they won the Super Bowl.
There are to many holes to fill for Seattle to just rely on the draft. The team is going to need to bring in a few players. It’ll be interesting to see if they go for a splash signing or stick with adding backups to improve depth.
