Seattle Seahawks: 5 Biggest free agency decisions this offseason
By Samuel Teets
How to proceed with the offensive line
Both of Seattle’s starting guards, D.J. Fluker, and J.R. Sweezy, will be free agents this offseason. Fluker and Sweezy played a huge role in helping the Seahawks lead the league in rushing this season. Chris Carson owes these two a lot because they were the two maulers up front who set the tempo on the ground.
Despite how much these two contributed this season, Seattle should also consider the health of their quarterback. Wilson took a beating all year long and was sacked a career-high 51 times. Now some of that’s also on Germain Ifedi, who’s been disappointing, Justin Britt, and even Duane Brown. Brown, a Second Team All-Pro, is irreplaceable for the Seahawks, but everyone else seems exchangeable.
Granted the hot attitudes of Fluker and Sweezy have endeared them to the Seattle fan base, but Wilson is the biggest priority. If letting one of these two walk in favor of a better pass blocker is an option, Seattle should consider it.
While the run game did get the team to the playoffs, it also killed them in that Wild Card game. There has to be an effective pass blocking scheme as well, and that hasn’t been there for Wilson most of his career. I do think Seattle will resign at least one of the guards, but they should consider making a play for at least one new offensive lineman.
