Dion Sims, Tight End

Many were left scratching their heads when the Chicago Bears gave Dion Sims a three-year, $18 million ($6 million guaranteed) deal in 2017. That number was especially absurd given the fact that the most receiving yards he had in one season occurred in his second in 2014 when he had 286 yards. His season-high in touchdown catches was 4 in 2016.

In the two seasons in Chicago, Sims has 17 catches for 189 yards and 1 touchdown. Not many expected the Bears to get their money’s worth in that deal and they were correct in that thinking.

When the Bears picked up Trey Burton last offseason the thought was Sims would be expendable. That didn’t happen as the team held onto five tight ends (Sims, Burton, Adam Shaheen, Ben Braunecker, and Daniel Brown). Shaheen battled the injury bug, playing in just seven games (including the playoffs). That opened up an opportunity for Sims to step up but he just couldn’t.

WIth a healthy Shaheen moving forward, the Bears have a good duo with him and Burton. Braunecker and Brown could be good backups. That leaves the expensive Sims as the odd man out.

If the Bears cut Sims, they save themselves $6 million in cap space (per Over The Cap). That is a big chunk of money to use on the roster. The tight end position is pretty solid and Sims isn’t contributing much so the money can be better spent elsewhere.
