Rodger Saffold

It’s all about tweaking that offensive line and finding guys who can keep the run game going while still protecting Wilson. Besides, both of Seattle’s starting guards are set to be free agents. D.J. Fluker and J.R. Sweezy did wonders for the Seahawks run game and built up a tough guy mentality along the line, but Wilson was still getting hit quite a lot.

We already know that impending Los Angeles Rams free agent Rodger Saffold is more than a capable run blocker, just look at what he’s helped Todd Gurley and C.J. Anderson accomplish. I’d go as far to say he might even be an upgrade as a run blocker over Fluker and Sweezy.

The key really is whether his pass blocking abilities will create a significant difference. Jared Goff, who Saffold has protected the last three seasons, was sacked 33 times in 2018. That’s not ideal, but it’s leagues better than the 51 times Wilson was taken down.

This isn’t saying that it would be a bad thing if Seattle brought back both of their 2018 guards, but the chance of getting both of them seems slim when you consider how these things go. If there’s an opening available, Saffold will be the best available guard. Plus, the Seahawks signing him would steal a talented player away from the Rams. That has to count for something.
