16. Carolina Panthers: Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama

After failing to make the playoffs in 2018, the Carolina Panthers will need to make some changes this season. While the health of quarterback Cam Newton will be a huge factor, so too will be the play of their defense. Once a strength of this team, that side of the ball has taken a step backward.

Heading into the 2019 NFL Draft, they need to add some talent to correct that issue. They could look to add a defensive end to help with their pass rush, or maybe try and rebuild their secondary. Here they look to the back end by taking Deionte Thompson. The Alabama safety comes in highly regarded and is incredibly well rounded according to Jon Ledyard of The Draft Network.

"“Physical and athletic safety prospect with excellent closing burst on routes breaking in front of him. Plays fast and aggressive. Constantly looking to get in on the action, typical Alabama mindset to dictate terms as a tackler. Has the radius to get runners to the ground by wrapping up outside his frame. Will lower the boom when given the opportunity. Can seamlessly adjust his angle to the ball on the fly.” — Ledyard, The Draft Network"

Thompson recorded 78 tackles and two interceptions, while also batting down six passes as a redshirt junior. It was an impressive season, which was also the only year that saw him as a full-time starter.
