Which NFL teams have the most Super Bowl wins?
Super Bowl 53 is this Sunday, but the question for football fans is which NFL teams have won the most championships since the merger?
There will be a new Super Bowl champion this Sunday, as the previous 52 Super Bowls have seen a total of 20 franchises win the championship and hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy over their head.
Though the top question entering the weekend is whether the New England Patriots or the Los Angeles Rams will win the 53rd edition of the Big Game, another question is which NFL teams have won the most Super Bowls in history?
Winning the most Super Bowl titles is the Pittsburgh Steelers, having an NFL-record six championships in the modern era, with four in the 70s, followed with two more in the 2000s.

Pittsburgh won their first at Super Bowl IX when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings, 16-6 on Jan. 12, 1975. The Steelers repeated as champions the next year, defeating the Dallas Cowboys, 21-17 on Jan. 18, 1976. The Steelers were back in the Big Game in consecutive years, once again, in 1979 and 1980.
They defeated the Cowboys, 35-31 at Super Bowl XIII on Jan 21, 1979. That win was followed with their fourth title as Pittsburgh beat the Rams, 31-19, on Jan. 20, 1980.
It wasn’t until the 40th annual playing of the Big Game when the Steelers won for the fifth time, defeating the Seattle Seahawks, 21-10 on Feb. 5, 2006. The Steelers’ most recent title came on Feb. 1, 2009 when they defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 27-23 at Super Bowl XLIII.
There are three others with five Super Bowl titles and they are the following teams:
- San Francisco 49ers (XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, XXIX),
- Dallas Cowboys (VI, XII, XXVII, XXVIII, XXX)
- New England Patriots (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI)
The Super Bowl has a great history and the storied game this Sunday between the Patriots and the Rams will have some history of its own for the Patriots. If New England loses they will become the first team in history to lose six Super Bowls, as they are currently the only franchise to lose five as well.
Of the four top winningest teams, the Steelers are 6-2 in their eight appearances, followed by the 49ers at 5-1, the Cowboys at 5-3 and the Patriots at 5-5.
Other notable winners are the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants with four wins, while the Oakland Raiders, Washington Redskins and the Denver Broncos have each won three titles in their appearances in the Big Game.
A win by the Patriots will put them in a first-place tie with the Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins of all-tie with six, but the Rams are looking to become just the 13th franchise to win multiple championships since the league merger.
