Round 5, Pick 2: Tytus Howard, OT, Alabama State

Starting tackles Kelvin Beachum and Brandon Shell graded out as average according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), so tackle is not a major need for the Jets, however adding some depth with a small school late round flier may not be a bad idea.

Not to mention, the Jets have the ability to eat $1.5 million in dead money and save $8 million if they decide to trade or cut soon-to-be 30-year old Beachum this offseason. Given the amount of cap space the Jets have versus their need at tackle, this is not likely, but stranger things have happened in this league.

A fifth-year senior from Alabama State, Tytus Howard finds his draft stock rising after a solid showing in Mobile at the Senior Bowl last week. Howard weighed in at 6-6, 311 pounds in Mobile and has been discussed as a prospect who could potentially swing in and play guard as well as tackle. In addition to the Senior Bowl, Howard has solid tape against Auburn, the only big school competition that Alabama State saw in 2018.

Howard has received and invitiation to Indianapolis for the combine and given his size and versatility, he has the potential to test very well there. If he manages to test well, he could see his stock rise even higher. Here at the beginning of the fifth round, the Jets have the opportunity to select him.
