Round 7, Pick 3: Tyler Petite, TE, USC

Tight end was a bright spot for the Jets in 2018 as fourth round pick Chris Herndon improved steadily and became Darnold’s most reliable target by the end of the season. Herndon capped off his rookie campaign with 502 yard and four scores. However, behind Herndon does not lie much depth.

With a seventh round flier, the Jets select tight end Tyler Petite from the University of Southern California. The senior tight end only tallied a total of 638 yards and seven touchdowns in his four years with the Trojans, but battled injuries throughout his senior season.

Petite had his best season in 2017 when Sam Darnold was the signal caller for the Trogans, where he caught 23 passes for 307 yard and three touchdowns. His familiarity with Darnold makes him and interesting target in the seventh round for the Jets.

Drafting in late rounds is like throwing things against a wall and seeing what sticks, and with such a low risk, this could be a risk that the Jets take to see if it sticks. Tight end is a position of need depth-wise for New York, and a backup for Herndon would not be surprising in the least.
