Rob Gronkowski is one of the best players at the tight end position in NFL history. His combination of size, speed, athleticism and power has made him a matchup nightmare throughout his career and an elite-level weapon for Brady in the passing game. That being said, injuries have been an issue throughout Gronk’s career and his body is clearly wearing down.

At this point, it is difficult to say whether Gronkowski will even play next season. If if he decides to come back, the Patriots cannot continue to count on Gronk the way that they once was. It is time to find his long-term replacement and Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson would be the perfect fit.

Playing alongside fellow top-tier tight end prospect Noah Fant, Hockenson was a beast on the field for Iowa this season. He finished his redshirt sophomore season at Iowa with an impressive 49 receptions for 760 yards and 7 total touchdowns. For his play in 2018, Hockenson took home the Mackey Award for the top tight end in the nation.

A consistent and reliable in the middle of the field, Hockenson has a knack for getting open as a receiver. He shows impressive route running skills and enough speed and quickness to burn opposing linebackers who are in man coverage. He also possesses strong hands and the ability to make the catch in traffic.

Hockenson was impressive as a receiver for the Hawkeyes, but he is arguably an even blocker. He can overpower opposing defenders when the situation calls for it, while also showing the ability to use his mobility as a blocker in open space.

Simply put, Hockenson is an extremely well-rounded tight end prospect who has impressive upside at the next level. The New England Patriots find the ideal Gronkowski replacement right here in this mock draft.
