Round 2: T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa

There are really three ways the Dallas Cowboys can go with their first pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. They can go tight end, safety, or defensive tackle. All three are pretty string needs and it really depends on who is available. It also depends on what happens in free agency.

Dallas has been linked to Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas since late in the 2017 season when he went up to head coach Jason Garrett and asked him to make a move for the All-Pro safety. If he signs, then safety is no longer a dire need.

As for defensive tackle, this could be a draft where they can find talent at that spot beyond the second round. Unless one of the studs falls to them — like a Jerry Tillery — the Cowboys should probably wait. That’s what happens in this mock, but they’re totally fine with how things fall as Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson is on the board.

Hockenson fits the Cowboys offense better than probably any prospect in this entire draft. He’s a capable blocker at the position, but can also run great routes and has soft hands. The Cowboys can use a player at this position to offer a safety valve for Dak Prescott — and Hockenson would be an upgrade over their current stable of players.
