Selecting Multiple Offensive Lineman in the Draft

Deshaun Watson was sacked a lot in 2018. In fact, no quarterback was sacked more than Watson, who was dragged to the ground 62 times throughout the season. The Texans invested a lot in Watson as their franchise quarterback, and rightfully so as he has looked like one of the league’s best when healthy.

Now it is time to invest heavily in protecting their teams most important piece. If they continue to let him get hit like they did in 2018, they are going to have problems with him staying healthy.

The Texans should invest at least two of their first four picks on offensive lineman, and depending who falls in the draft, maybe three. They do not lack a lot on their offense, besides maybe a tight end, which means these picks are going to be used on offensive lineman. Most of their defensive holes can be fixed through free agency, so do not be surprised to see the Texans walk away with as many as three offensive lineman through the first three rounds.

In the first round the Texans can expect to see someone like Dalton Risner, Chris Lindstrom or Garrett Bradbury available. All would immediately help improve the offensive line and likely be Day 1 starters for the Texans.

In the second, the Texans have their own second round pick as well as the Seattle Seahawks second round pick. This means they will have back to back picks in the second round. They could stay put and let the draft come to them or move up. Either way, I expect one of these second round picks to also be used on an offensive lineman.

The Texans would be better to select too many offensive lineman, than not enough. Watson has already missed time as a Texan and we saw how big of an impact it had on the entire team. Offensive line help is without question the biggest offensive need the Texans have this offseason.
