2019 NFL Mock Draft: Broncos lock up quarterback, Eagles land corner
By Cory Kinnan
6. New York Giants: Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State
This is a long time coming; after passing on 2018 prospects Josh Allen, Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen, the Giants opted to draft Pepsi and AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick, despite a glaring hole at the quarterback position. The Giants, once again, have the opportunity to take a top-tier quarterback in a weak quarterback class in 2019.
Despite Eli Manning coming off one of his better years passing, he has still seen a decline in his play over the last five years, and is entering his 16th season in the league at the age of 38. Even if the Giants bridge with Manning in 2019, which is expected, a young talented signal caller must be pursued at the top of the draft.
Dwayne Haskins enters the 2019 draft as the top tanked gunslinger, largely due to Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert deciding to return to Eugene for one more season. The Heisman candidate broke Buckeye and Big Ten records under center in Columbus, throwing for an eye popping 50 touchdowns with 4,800 yards while completing a staggering 70 percent of his passes in his only season as the starter for Ohio State.
Those kind of numbers at a power five school while having the stature of 6-3 and 220 pounds will get you noticed by NFL scouts. Haskins, frequently knocked for checking down too quickly and not fully seeing the field, will have some questions to answer during the pre-draft process, but does not have much competition atop the quarterback big board and should be a lock to be the first quarterback off the board.
