26. Worst NFL free agency signings this century: Peerless Price

A deep threat and kick returner for the University of Tennessee, wide receiver Peerless Price ended up being chosen in the second round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. Once there, he developed into a solid No. 2 receiver. After three productive seasons in Western New York, Price broke out in 2002 with the best season of his career.

That was the year Buffalo had brought in quarterback Drew Bledsoe. The former New England Patriots gun-slinger developed an instant rapport with Price. Working with the strong-armed quarterback, Price hauled in 94 passes for 1,252 yards and nine touchdowns. Then, he hit the open market ready to cash in on his big season.

The Atlanta Falcons came calling, handing him a seven-year contract worth $37.5 million. They quickly learned that not every receiver that puts up big numbers as a No. 2 receiver is able to excel once thrust into the No. 1 role. In his first year with the Falcons, Price ended up with 838 yards on 64 receptions — but had a career-low catch rate of 42.5 percent according to Pro Football Reference.

He lasted just one more season after that, as he registered 45 catches for 575 yards in 2004 before being released. His former quarterback later vouched for him. Price got another shot with the Dallas Cowboys, which is where Bledsoe ended up after leaving Buffalo. Price joined them in 2005 on a one-year deal, but hardly produced for them. He re-joined the Bills for the final two seasons of his career.
