2019 NFL Draft: Names to keep an eye on at NFL Combine
By Cory Kinnan
Linebackers
Unlike the front-seven, this is not a great year for the linebacking class, with only three names sticking out at the top. While some late round sleepers such as Khalil Hodge or Jermaine Pratt exist, if your team is in desperate need of a linebacker, they will want to take on of these three names.
Devin White, LSU
The consensus top linebacker in this year’s class and Butkus Award winner Devin White has rare speed at the second level that has him slated to be a top-15 pick this spring. Totaling 286 tackles, 28.5 of which were behind the line of scrimmage, in his two years as a starting backer for LSU, White displayed an ability to make plays all over the field.
Barring an unforeseen issue or injury, it appears the White is a lock to be the first linebacker off of the board in the 2019 NFL Draft. What will be rather intriguing is to see if White exceeds expectations that are already fairly high at Indianapolis. Keep a close eye on the athletic linebacker White.
Devin Bush, Michigan
Speaking of athletic linebackers named Devin, Devin Bush out of Michigan is also expected to test well and could see his name called on the first night of the draft, and possibly as the second linebacker taken. Right now mocked anywhere from late in the first to early in the second, Bush has a chance to really knock the socks off of scouts and general managers at the combine.
The ultra-competitive and gritty Wolverine has displayed an ability to shed blocks and stuff runners on tape. With a solid week in Indianapolis, Bush could solidify himself as a first rounder and see himself drafted as high as the teens.
Mack Wilson, Alabama
Mack Wilson is a conundrum that leaves many perplexed, including this writer. While he displays a good amount of athleticism, especially in coverage, his tape leaves many wanting more. Him and Bush are in a battle for the LB2 spot, as it is often a matter of opinion at this point.
Picking off six passes and defending an additional seven attempts, Wilson has the advantage in coverage over the Devins, but he has a lot of questions that need answered. He has been slated to be selected late in the first or early in the second in the majority of mocks. If he tests off the charts, he could stake his claim as a first round pick.
