Seattle Seahawks: Breaking down offensive line at 2019 offseason
By Samuel Teets
The Seattle Seahawks led the league in rushing yards per game last season, but Russell Wilson was sacked far too often.
The Seattle Seahawks need to fix their offensive line — stop me if you’ve heard this before. While the Seahawks have had success rushing the ball under head coach Pete Carroll, the pass blocking has struggled to hold up. Star franchise quarterback, Russell Wilson will turn 31 in 2019. He can’t keep running for his life. Eventually, he won’t be able to do all of those Houdini tricks in the backfield and pass rushers will gain a step on him.
Wilson’s current contract will end after the 2019 season. While I’m confident he’ll stay with the team, the Seahawks should do him a favor and finally get him the protection that many other top quarterbacks have.
Consider this, Tom Brady has been sacked a combined 56 times over the last two seasons. Wilson was sacked 51 times in 2018 alone. Since Wilson entered the league, he’s been sacked an average of 42 times per season.
Ben Roethlisberger dealt with a similar situation to Wilson early on in his career. He came into the league and played with a good defense and running game right away, but he was constantly being sacked. Now that he’s older and the defense and running game aren’t as good, the Pittsburgh Steelers have shelled out a lot of money on the offensive line.
Roethlisberger has been sacked just 82 times in the last four years. During that time, Wilson was sacked 180 times. That’s just unacceptable. How can Seattle expect Wilson to lead the team back to the Super Bowl under these conditions?
In this article, we’ll take a look at the offensive linemen the Seahawks started in 2018, what their futures look like, and what changes Seattle should consider.
