4 Safeties the Houston Texans should target in 2019 NFL free agency
The Houston Texans will be looking to add a safety this off season to help nail down their secondary. Here is four potential free agent safeties to target.
With last year’s starting safety, Tyrann Mathieu, becoming a pending free agent, the Houston Texans are going to be forced to make a decision in the 2019 offseason. They can choose to re-sign Mathieu, who struggled in pass coverage but had an elite year as a run stopper, or they can choose to go after a safety in free agency.
With potentially some very big names in free agency, could the Texans choose to look elsewhere for 2019 and beyond. With Justin Reid, their 2018 third-round pick, looking like a mid-round steal, pairing up another big playmaker in their secondary should be high on the Texans’ priority list this offseason.
The Texans will need to lock down another safety in order to solidify their safety positions in order to focus on other areas of the team. With a substantial amount of cap space, the Texans have the ammo to sign a big name free agent safety.
Here are the top four safeties the Houston Texans should target in 2019 free agency.
4. Adrian Amos – Chicago Bears
Being ranked fourth on this list is no knock at all on Amos. As you will see, there are some very talented names on this list for the Texans to target. Amos is coming off one of his best years as a pro, where he was a key piece to an elite Bears defense. It is coming at the perfect time, as Amos is set to become a free agent this offseason.
After struggling his first few years in coverage, Amos has rebounded into becoming one of the league’s best safeties when it comes to coverage. Amos is a good cover safety who also excels making tackles in the open field on opposing offensive players.
So what is it that makes him fourth on the list? His lack of consistency; we have only seen two good years from Amos, making him one of the more risky names on this list for the Texans.
Amos recorded two interceptions, one sack and one fumble recovery while playing in all 16 games in 2018. Amos has only missed four games in his four-year career, making him a reliable option should the Bears let him hit free agency. Expect Amos to sign a four- or five-year deal for around $7 million annually wherever he lands.
