7 Possible Denver Broncos targets in the 2019 NFL Draft
Christian Wilkins, DL, Clemson
Teams averaged just over 119 rushing yards per game against the Broncos in 2018. While not the worst mark in the NFL, they did finish as the league’s 10th worse run defense. To fix that, the Broncos need some beef in the middle.
Domata Peko is a free agent and he’s in his mid 30s, which is likely why he won’t be re-signed in Denver. Thus, the defense needs someone who can take on double teams, anchor against the run and is also quick enough to play the gaps. That’s exactly what Christian Wilkins brings.
At Clemson, the 6-4, 300-pound defensive lineman played multiple positions. There, he showed his versatility, which ideally suits Vic Fangio’s multi-faceted 3-4 defensive front. Wilkins is an ideal fit as a three-technique, but he’d fit in Fangio’s defense just fine.
Stoutly built with good power, he provides the necessary counter ability and quickness to be an effective pass rusher. What makes him a solid fit a nose tackle as well is his ability to anchor against double teams. Because of his strong hands he does a good job stacking and shedding blockers. While he doesn’t possess an elite first step, he’s quick enough off the line of scrimmage to exploit gaps.
Wilkins is immensely talented who could hear his name called inside the top 15. With teams desperate for a quarterback, the Broncos could trade down. As long as they stay inside the top half of the draft, they could do so and still nab Wilkins — or they can stay put and take him. Either way it’s a win.
