New York Jets: Pre-Combine 7-round 2019 mock draft
By Cory Kinnan
Round 3, Pick 29: Justin Layne, CB, Michigan State
Filling another need in the third round, the Jets select converted receiver to cornerback Justin Layne out of Michigan State.
After signing Trumaine Johnson and Morris Claiborne a year ago in free agency, Claiborne is set to move on and the Jets are in need of someone to play opposite of Johnson. While he may not be a day one starter, Layne has as high of a ceiling as any prospect in this cornerback class.
Layne is a towering 6-3 and 185 pounds, and has the frame to add muscle. If he does bulk up, he absolutely has the potential to become a lockdown corner at the next level in the NFL. After sitting out his bowl game to train for the pre-draft process, Layne now has a gigantic opportunity in front of him and could end up vaulting himself into the early second round or sooner.
During his three year career with the Spartans, Layne intercepted three passes and knocked down and additional 24 balls. While his numbers do not jump off of the charts, his film does with the way that he attacks the ball at its peak and has the speed to stick with receivers down the field. The Jets nab Layne at the end of the third round in this mock draft.
