2015: Brandon Scherff – First Round, Fifth overall pick

We’re back on the first pick train. Brandon Scherff was the first round selection of the Washington Redskins in 2015. A good amount of fans weren’t too happy that the Redskins took a guard (tackle in college but the plan was to move him to guard) with the fifth overall pick. It didn’t take long for Scherff to silence any and all doubt that he was the right choice though.

Through four seasons, it’s safe to say he’s one of the best guards in all of football. He’s incredible in the running game and an underrated pass blocker. The 27-year old has a fantastic combination of speed and overwhelming brute strength that allows him to get out in front of a play and throw any-and-every-one out of the way.

Scherff was on the All-Rookie Team in 2015 and has been to two Pro Bowls already. There’s a strong case that he was snubbed for All-Pro spots as well. Washington had a pretty strong overall draft that season too. Scherff is the clear star, but has solid backup.

Preston Smith was the second round pick, and has had some big seasons. Then there’s Jamison Crowder, who was drafted in the fourth round and is a fantastic slot receiver.

Meanwhile, safety Kyshoen Jarrett put together an incredibly impressive rookie season and looked to have an extremely bright future. Many were already labeling him as Washington’s next great safety. That ended when nerve damage ended his career after one season. A sixth-round pick (181st overall) that ended his rookie year with 58 tackles and four pass deflections, he was on the path to greater things and potentially could’ve fought Scherff for this spot.

Sadly, that wasn’t meant to be and we’re left with thoughts of what could’ve been.

Scherff suffered an injury of his own last year, playing in just eight games. However, no one is worried about his future and he’s expected back and just as dominant as ever. The Redskins knocked this pick out of the park despite speculation, and it’s only going to look better as time goes on.
