For a couple of seasons now, the safety position has been an area of concern for the Cowboys. For whatever reason, the Jason Garrett-era has somewhat devalued the position as they have put converted cornerbacks and free agent pickups at the spot. They even toyed with the idea of playing 2017 second-round pick Chidobe Awuzie there — which was after they wasted the first couple of seasons of Byron Jones’ career.

With Jones moved back to corner in 2018 (where he was a star), the Cowboys had Xavier Woods and Jeff Heath as their starters. The results were less than ideal as the defense was good, but they were missing that game-changer on the back end — which could have made them elite.

There’s a chance they could go into free agency in the offseason to improve the secondary, with rumors having them connected to Earl Thomas. However, this may not be the best route to take considering their salary cap situation. Instead, the Cowboys may need to finally devote some draft capital into the safety position. One player who they should look at for this is Chauncey Gardner-Johnson of Florida.

Gardner-Johnson improved every season for the Gators and had career highs in tackles (71), interceptions (4), and touchdowns (2). He proved to be the kind of ball hawk the Cowboys have desired for years. Should he test well at the Combine, he could propel himself up their board.
