Dallas Cowboys: 5 Players to watch at 2019 NFL Scouting Combine
By Randy Gurzi
1. Gerald Willis III, DT, Miami
Knowing that David Irving won’t be back, the Cowboys need to address the defensive tackle position and Gerald Willis III from Miami fits the bill rather well. Formerly a top recruit at Florida, Willis transferred to Miami where he started to grow into a star.
He finished his senior season with 59 tackles, 18 for a loss, and four sacks. During his strong 2018 campaign, Willis even cracked Chris Trapasso’s top-20 prospect rankings on CBS Sports.
"“Willis has been a one-man wrecking crew for the Hurricanes with 13 tackles for loss in the team’s first seven games. He might have the most effective swim move in the nation, and he plays with serious power at the point of attack. He has a checkered past off the field but has done plenty of good for his draft stock early in 2018.” — Trapasso, CBS Sports"
Dallas has improved some at the one-technique with the emergence of Antwuan Woods. However, they struggled some next to him and could look to add someone like Willis who can wreak havoc in the opposing backfield.
In order to land Willis, Dallas would likely need to use their second-round pick. That means they need to pay close attention to everything he does at the Combine in order to make sure he’s worth the price — should they be interested in him that is.
