Green Bay Packers: Nick Perry

With their first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected USC linebacker Nick Perry at No. 28 overall. Since then, Perry has been a fixture on this Packers defense, appearing in 81 games, while making 41 starts.

Though he has been a solid player, he has not really lived up to the financial commitment the Packers have made in him. Prior to the 2017 NFL season, Green Bay doubled down on Perry, signing him to a five-year extension, which will pay him $60 million. This includes a signing bonus of over $18 million.

That is big-time money for a player who has never been a constant starter on a Packers defense that has been nothing to write home about over the last couple of seasons. In 2019, Perry is going to count over $14 million against the cap, which is second to only All-Pro quarterback Aaron Rodgers in terms of a cap hit.

The dead money on Perry’s contract for 2019 is at $11 million as well, making him very hard to move on from this offseason. Next year, he has a $7.4 million dead cap hit, which is cut in half after the 2020 NFL season.

The Packers made a big investment in Perry. The hope is the new change in coaching staff can get his career pointed in the right direction.
