Kansas City Chiefs: Sammy Watkins

The Kansas City Chiefs had one of the more explosive offenses in pro football this past season, as they got an incredible effort from a guy entering his first season as a starter at quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes stepped in beautifully for the traded Alex Smith, leading the Chiefs to a 14-2 record, and the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC Playoffs.

Included in Mahomes’ season were some magical numbers, as he threw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in his first year under center for Kansas City. As the league’s Most Valuable Player, Mahomes got incredible production from so many weapons on the offensive side of the ball, but not so much their most expensive one.

Sammy Watkins is the No. 2 cap hit this upcoming season for the Chiefs, after signing a monster deal with the team prior to the 2018 NFL season. Watkins inked a three-year, $48 million contract with Kansas City last offseason, including $30 million in guaranteed money. He is an incredibly large dead cap hit as well.

If the Chiefs move on from him this season, he will count as a $22 million dead cap number, so getting rid of Watkins will be a tall order. He only hauled in 40 catches in year one with Kansas City, making nine starts, and finding the end zone only three times. He is the worst contract on the books for the Chiefs by far.
