Miami Dolphins: Robert Quinn

The Miami Dolphins welcomed in a new head coach this offseason, as they plucked Brian Flores away from the New England Patriots. Flores had spent the last 15 years as a member of Bill Belichick’s staff winning four Super Bowls, finishing his time there as the play-caller for the team’s defense.

As he takes over from Adam Gase, he will be inheriting a pretty mediocre ballclub, one that has a lot of work to do if they want to be competitive in the AFC East next season. One area where they could afford to shed some payroll is up front on defense, where Robert Quinn is slated to make a boatload of money this season.

Quinn was traded to the Dolphins from the Los Angeles Rams in March 2018, after seven years with the organization. There was a time when Quinn was one of the better edge rushers in football. He had a three-year stretch from 2012 to 2014 where he racked up 40 sacks, including a career-high 19.0 in 2013.

Unfortunately, Quinn has not reached the double-digit sack mark since the 2014 season. He will count nearly $13 million against the cap for the Dolphins this season. Flores may decide to clean house. With Quinn not costing the team any dead cap money if they make a move, he could be a player they use to clear out some cap space heading into 2019.
