The Memphis Express look for new life as Zach Mettenberger takes over and they take on the San Diego Fleet in Week 4 of the AAF season.
To begin their inaugural AAF season, the Memphis Express trotted out NFL-punchline and general bad quarterback Christian Hackenberg for the better part of three games. Last week, however, he was benched for Zach Mettenberger and the move worked wonders. Though the Express lost again to move to 0-3, they now have optimism and for good reason as they head into their matchup on Saturday with the San Diego Fleet.
The Fleet are certainly not slouches at this point as they have been one of the more impressive teams in the Western Conference to this point, sitting at 2-1. Running back Ja’Quan Gardner was the AAF Player of the Week on offense after his performance last week. Coupled with Phillip Nelson stepping up at quarterback, this team is in a good spot right now as they go on the road to Memphis.
As stated, the switch to Mettenberger could be monumentally important for the Express. He gives the offense mobility and, frankly, a sense of competency at the helm of the offense that wasn’t there before. Considering that the Memphis defense has indeed played well at times this season, it will be interesting to see if this now vaults them to a new level.

This could be quite the interesting game for both the San Diego Fleet and Memphis Express alike, though for different reasons. For the Fleet, they’re looking to establish control in the AAF Western Conference at Week 4. Meanwhile, the Express hope that Mettenberger ultimately helps them turn things around moving forward. This should be a fun one to watch.
