The 2019 NFL Combine did not tell scouts and general managers anything they did not already know as the NFL Draft quarterback class remains thin and risky.
It is a tough year for your favorite NFL team to need a quarterback as there are three prospects in the 2019 NFL Draft that separate themselves, and even the top prospect does not compare to the 2018 class. If general managers are unable to land one of the top two prospects, it may be better for them to wait until next year.
It was evident that out of all of the participating quarterbacks in the combine drills, Dwayne Haskins out of Ohio State was on an island on his own, followed at a safe distance by Missouri’s Drew Lock. The rest of the prospects displaying their talents such as Trace McSorley, Daniel Jones and Will Grier did not come close to the talent that Haskins and Lock displayed on the field.
While Kyler Murray out of Oklahoma was the talk of the town in Indianapolis this weekend, weighing in at over 200 pounds and measuring slightly over 5-10, the Heisman Trophy winner did not partake in any test nor perform any on-field drills this weekend.
Let’s be real, not many would perform on these athletic tests if they had to cram their face full of food and weight-gainer in order to reach 200 pounds.
Biding time to shed the extra weight and get back into shape, Murray will perform up to par at his pro day, and will likely be a top-10 pick with Haskins and potentially Lock. Other than these three prospects, teams will be hard pressed to find another signal caller worthy of investing a valuable asset in.
Jones out of Duke may land in the first round as well as supply and demand will force teams to reach in order to grab a prospect in a slim class. However, outside of Haskins and Murray, it will be a risky proposition for to take a chance on all other prospects, including Lock. Nothing new was learned about this quarterback class after they took the stage at the combine this weekend.
