NFL Free Agency 2019: Predicting the New York Jets biggest moves
By Randy Gurzi
1. New York signs Ziggy Ansah to a two-year deal
Departing head coach Todd Bowles ran a defense where he didn’t think there was a need for a premium edge rusher. His thought process was that he could generate pressure by scheming up a good plan and therefore they were without a stellar defensive end for the past couple of seasons. That could change in 2019 NFL Free Agency.
While there will be some solid players out there, one name that could generate interest in Ezekiel Ansah formerly of the Detroit Lions. What makes Ansah so intriguing is his incredible ceiling. He’s an elite pass rusher who has been dominant at times in his career. However, signing him would not be without risk.
Ansah won’t be getting a long-term deal in the Motor City due to his inability to stay healthy. He was franchise tagged last season because of that and missed most of the year during his ‘prove-it’ deal. That doesn’t mean he won’t get another shot, because his talent is simply too great for that.
For the Jets, this makes sense because they can lure him over by offering a solid salary and a place to shine. Even so, they would be wise to make sure it isn’t an insanely long deal that destroys the cap space they worked hard to build up.
Look for the Jets and Ziggy Ansah to come to terms on a two-year deal which gives him some security while also protecting them from a player with durability concerns. It’s a low-risk, high-reward gamble for the Jets, but it’s one they should take.
