Green Bay Packers: 5 Bargains to target in 2019 NFL free agency
By Joe Kipp
Sometimes teams tend to overspend in free agency. Here are five bargain players the Green Bay Packers can target in 2019 NFL free agency.
Searching for bargains in free agency isn’t always easy. Often times, players are overcompensated for past production. Signing players on a buy-low basis usually means teams are banking on how they fit in their system. For the Green Bay Packers, finding these types of players will be crucial in 2019 NFL free agency.
Deciphering which players are good fits for teams’ respective systems means hours upon hours of tape study. Finding the small details in each player’s skill-set is much more useful than relying on the box score. For instance, some players may have underwhelming stats, but still manage to make a huge impact on the game.
This is what allows some free agents to fly under the radar and become bargains. Teams do a poor job of scouting and looking at the full picture of what the free agent is capable of. Without having full knowledge and applying context to the situation, they miss out on a potential home run signing.
While the evaluation of a player’s skill-set can be subjective, evaluating whether a player is a bargain is much less murky. Comparing salaries among players at the same position provides excellent context for whether a given player is overpaid. However, it usually takes a few years to determine these types of conclusions.
The Packers will have somewhere between $30-40 million in cap space to spend on free agents this spring. Signing bargains could mean a fast turnaround from last season’s abysmal 6-9-1 finish. Three or four players making a total of $20 million (averaged out to $5 million each) could help boost the roster in a big way.
Any of the following five unrestricted free agents would have a significant impact for Green Bay at a bargain price. With that said, here are five potential bargains the Green Bay Packers should target in 2019 NFL free agency.
