Green Bay Packers: 5 Bargains to target in 2019 NFL free agency
By Joe Kipp
RB T.J. Yeldon
Despite being used sparingly during his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, running back T.J. Yeldon has had a productive NFL career thus far. The former 2015 second round pick out of Alabama has 1,872 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns on 4.0 yards per carry over four seasons.
With 51 games under his belt, Yeldon has plenty of experience. The main reason he hasn’t logged as many carries as other bell-cow running backs is due to the presence of star runner Leonard Fournette. Yeldon has mainly been used as a fill-in during Fournette’s injury-plagued career.
Another reason he hasn’t been utilized as a runner is because of his ability as a receiver. Yeldon has 171 receptions for 1,302 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns since coming into the league. But despite being a reliable backup and third-down pass catcher, it seems unlikely that the Jags will re-sign him.
The Jaguars have salary cap issues and have already restructured Marcell Dareus’ contract in an effort for cap relief. They’re also pegged as the favorites to land free agent quarterback Nick Foles. It appears re-signing Yeldon is the least of their priorities.
Cue the Packers as a potential fit on a short two-year contract. A buy-low candidate, Yeldon would provide excellent experience and would serve as Green Bay’s third-down specialist. He also has familiarity with new Packers’ offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who served in the same role with the Jaguars from 2016-18.
