Green Bay Packers: 5 Bargains to target in 2019 NFL free agency
By Joe Kipp
G Quinton Spain
The Packers could do a lot worse than Quinton Spain at guard. In fact, nearly anyone could’ve performed better than what Green Bay dealt with at right guard last season. With experience in head coach Matt LaFleur’s system while both were on the Tennessee Titans, Spain is a bargain free agent to watch when the new league year begins on Mar. 13.
Green Bay started the 2018 season with Justin McCray at right guard, who seized that spot to Byron Bell after suffering a shoulder injury in the first few weeks. Neither player was capable of holding down the right interior of the offensive line. The Packers also started Lucas Patrick at the position. Spain would be a welcomed addition.
With 48 games started over his four seasons, Spain, 27, would be a significant signing at a possibly low price. Although a better pass protector than a run blocker, he’d do just fine blocking in between center Corey Linsley and right tackle Bryan Bulaga.
Spain was PFF’s No. 23 rated pass blocking guard (subscription required) last season and only allowed one sack. With familiarity in coach LaFleur’s scheme, Spain is a name to watch in free agency.
