29. Kansas City Chiefs: Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama

Every year it seems like an Alabama safety is in the first round and it happens again here as the Kansas City Chiefs select Deionte Thompson with their first-round pick. Listed at 6-1 and 195 pounds, the Texas-native fits best as a free safety, which is an area of concern for the Chiefs.

Easily the most exciting offense in the NFL in 2018, the Chiefs had to be on their game every day in terms of scoring points in 2018. That’s because their defense was an absolute mess. They struggled to make stops which was highlighted by their inability to get the New England Patriots off the field despite several third-and-long attempts in overtime of the AFC Championship game.

There are those calling for rule changes to try and make sure each team gets the ball, but that won’t solve the problem. The fact is, football is a team sport and the Chiefs weren’t a complete team considering how bad they were on defense.

Adding Thompson is the first step toward fixing that. They still need better cornerbacks and they could stand to add another linebacker, but for now, this will help them slow teams down some.
