Oakland Raiders: Post-Combine 7-Round 2019 mock draft
Donald Penn‘s days may be numbered after his season ended on injured reserve in consecutive years. Going into his age-36 campaign, he has little experience at right tackle. Right tackle Brandon Parker lined up three years at left tackle as a collegian. Filling in for Penn, he struggled at a new position against top-level competition in the pros.
Hopefully, for Carr’s sake, offensive line coach Tom Cable understands the need to add a prospect with experience at right tackle. Max Scharping has manned both sides of the line at Northern Illinois.
Scharping started 22 contests at right tackle before moving to the left for his junior and senior terms. At 6-6, 327 pounds, he fits the prototypical strong-side perimeter blocker who can seal the edge on outside runs.
On film, Scharping also uses his 33 5/8-inch arms to keep the pocket clean as a wall in pass protection. He’s strong enough to handle power edge-rushers with the quickness to stay in front of speedy pass-rushers split out wide.
The former Husky’s extensive experience also allows flexibility to move him around as a swing tackle early in his career.
In the process of finding out if Carr solidifies his spot as the franchise quarterback under Gruden, the front office can’t allow him to take anywhere close to 51 sacks in the upcoming season. As Penn walks toward the sunset of his career and the verdict on Parker remains inconclusive, it’s best the Raiders continue to add talent at the position.
