Chicago Bears: 7-Round 2019 mock draft, post-Combine
Mike Bell can come in and provide added depth to the safety spot. He played both strong safety and free safety so defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano can use him at both spots in a rotation. He can cover well (8 passes defended in 2018) and can read the quarterback and diagnose a play very quickly.
Bell has fluid hips which allow him to move quickly in anticipating direction. He can slip under blocks and provide run support. Against the pass, he intercepted four passes in his career. There were quite a few more that he dropped, however. He has great instincts for the ball, but needs more coaching up to get better. He did get three of his interceptions in 2018, however, so he is improving.
Bell uses good technique when tackling. He goes through the ball carrier and keeps churning his legs. He is a dependable tackler. With other players, they need their teammates to help get someone down. Bell can easily get the ball carrier down without help. He had 104 solo tackles alone in the last two seasons.
For the Bears defense, Bell can be a good rotational player. He can help spell the starters so they can stay fresh. He might not start right away but he’ll add some value to the defense.
