player. 819. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Notre Dame. Alex Bars. Offensive Lineman. 7

The Chicago Bears were busy earlier this offseason keeping the continuity of the offensive line. They extended tackle Bobby Massie‘s contract and restructured guard Kyle Long‘s contract so they’d get more cap space this year. They have all five starters returning in 2019.

Because of that they just need to add depth along the line. Some of their backups are due to become free agents so the front office has some decisions to make. They won’t resign all of them so they’ll need to go through the draft for help.

Alex Bars has experience with offensive line coach Harry Hiestand. Hiestand coached him when he had the same position at Notre Dame. Bars played on the other side of former Fighting Irish great Quenton Nelson but also has experience playing both guard spots and right guard as well. The Bears spoke with him during the Combine so there might be interest there.

Bars suffered a torn ACL in September that cost his season. His medicals were clear when he went to the Combine, however (but he didn’t participate in on-field drills).

At 6-6, 315 pounds, Bars has good size. Being able to play multiple positions helps him latch on to a spot. Of course, being trained by Hiestand, he uses great technique and angles to block defenders. He is a very good run blocker, using those angles to open holes for the running back.

Bars might not be starter material but the Chicago Bears don’t need that at the moment. They need someone who can help as a backup, assisting at different positions. He can provide that and can be a good value pick. Remember, Charles Leno Jr. was also a seventh-round pick and he is now a very good tackle.
