Round 4 (Compensatory): Anthony Nelson, DE, Iowa

Defensive end was a slight need for the Cowboys when the season ended, then it became a greater need once the league announced a suspension for Randy Gregory. It’s now a gaping hole considering they haven’t come to terms with their All-Pro pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence.

More from Dallas Cowboys

After hitting the Boise State product with a second-consecutive franchise tag, whispers began to suggest he could sit out the entire season. Should that happen, the Boys are looking at starting Taco Charlton and Tyrone Crawford with Dorrance Armstrong in the mix as well. That’s not ideal for a team who banks on quarterback pressures to kick start their defense.

Should the stalemate with Lawrence continue, they may need to sign someone in free agency or go higher in the draft. Even if they do get things worked out with D-Law, the Cowboys would be best served to add more talent on the edge.

With their lone compensatory pick, they do just that with Anthony Nelson from Iowa. Nelson looks like the kind of defensive end Dallas targets as he stands 6-7 and weighs 271 pounds. He has incredibly long arms and a non-stop motor. He may never become a starter in the NFL, but he could be a strong depth piece.
