Round 5: Trayveon Williams, RB, Texas A&M

Last season, the Cowboys ran Ezekiel Elliott early and often. The workhorse running back had a full load and then some as he carried the ball 304 times in the regular season and another 68 in the playoffs. He added 146 receptions in that same span and the hits he took from those touches took their toll.

Zeke never missed any time due to injuries, but he was often seen limping before games as he warmed up and was visibly beat up as the season wore on. Dallas did attempt to get Rod Smith some touches to alleviate the load on Zeke, but the production fell off without Elliott.

While there’s no one who will come in and match what he can do, Dallas could stand to upgrade the backup running back spot in general. There are rumors they’ve kicked the tires on a trade for Duke Johnson from the Cleveland Browns but he has a high price tag which could lead to them using the draft to add to the stable.

At the combine, one name that was tied to Dallas was Trayveon Williams out of Texas A&M. The shifty back racked up 3,615 yards and 34 touchdowns in three seasons with the Aggies. He’s not one of the players getting a lot of attention at the position and would be a steal at this point in the draft.
