3. Don’t be too passive

Under Thompson, the Packers were notoriously quiet in free agency. They would rarely sign any free agents other than their own, much to the chagrin of fans and analysts, and that ultimately that led to some of the shortcomings that the team dealt with over the last few years. Their team hasn’t been deep enough when they’ve dealt with injuries, and they’ve preserved cap space without ultimately using it to sign anyone.

This free agent class has players at impact position that Green Bay can be major players for, and Gutekunst needs to pick up the phone to get those players suiting up in the Green and Gold next season.

The Packers need edge rushers and safeties, and this free agent pool has a ton of them. They additionally can go after a lot of these players because they are unrestricted free agents rather than wondering if opposing teams are going to match the offers they put down.

This is similar to the previous mistake that must be avoided, but it’s different because of the need to be aggressive after the right players. Don’t drop $20 million per season on a rotation player when you could have spent $15 million on a starter if you had made the right move. Gutekunst is a smart operator, and he knows what the team’s needs are, so he has to go out and fill them.
