1. Don’t sign a player for the sake of signing someone

This is something that is super prevalent of the worst franchises in sports. When they miss out on a player in free agency but they have a ton of cap space, they insist on using it on a player for the sake of using it. Rather than preserving that space to keep the powder dry for the next year, they hand out a monster contract that ultimately forces them to eat that dead cap later in the contract.

Green Bay rarely does that, but it’s still important for them to consider that when they are making their free agency moves. They have this cap space because they’ve managed their money well, and they need to keep that in mind.

If they miss out on the big names like Landon Collins, DeMarcus Lawrence and others, they shouldn’t blow that cap space on secondary options at those positions like Clayton Geathers or Kony Ealy.

Do what the Indianapolis Colts did last year. They had a ton of cap space, and, when they didn’t sign elite players, they went out and added players in the wings to give them more depth. They now have the most cap space in the league, and they just went to the playoffs with an amazing young core. Green Bay can do the same thing, but they just have to go about it the right way.
