Round 3, Pick 66 (via Raiders): Jaylon Ferguson, EDGE, Louisiana Tech

When the Steelers took Bud Dupree, they were hoping that the absolute freak of an athlete would develop into a dominant presence coming off of the edge. Unfortunately for those in Pittsburgh, Dupree has only shown flashes to this point and there are few reasons to believe he will go beyond that moving forward. Though they added T.J. Watt to the pass-rushing mix, the Steelers would be served well to add another rusher off the edge.

Jaylon Ferguson might be a more natural 4-3 defensive end than a stand-up rush linebacker, but he can still have value as a rotational and versatile piece for the Steelers as a mid-round pickup. The NCAA record holder for sacks could have pass-rushing snaps, but has enough size to put his hand down on the line at times and can be a sub-package weapon as well. Adding him with the first selection via Oakland feels like a no-brainer.

Round 3, Pick 83: Drue Tranquill, LB, Notre Dame

For anyone looking to fully replace what Ryan Shazier brought to the middle of the Steelers defense, you can stop looking. By all accounts, that’s not going to happen as he was on his way to being one of the league’s best. However, Pittsburgh sorely does need to put players in the middle of the defense that are capable of patrolling the middle of the field and have upside. Drue Tranquill can be that.

Though he was looked upon as a limited athlete but a tough player with solid drive and instincts, the Notre Dame product went to the NFL Combine and put up far better numbers than many scouts were expecting him to. As such, he has seen his stock rise in recent weeks, which is why the Steelers have to nab him here. Given his mentality that fits perfectly in the Steel City and his upside and tools, though, they won’t regret the pick.
