S Tre Boston

Tre Boston has bounced around from team to team, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been an effective safety. He remains one of the better safeties still unsigned in 2019 NFL free agency.

Drafted in the fourth round in 2014 by the Carolina Panthers, Boston was released in 2017 and caught on with the Los Angeles Chargers. After electing not to re-sign with the Chargers, he signed a one-year prove-it deal with the Arizona Cardinals in 2018. It looks to have paid off.

Although he can be unreliable when it comes to tackling, Boston is extremely versatile in his coverage skills. In a defense that lacked any other semblance of life, Boston was one of the lone bright spots on the Arizona Cardinals defense in 2018. He finished the season with 79 total tackles (one for loss), three interceptions and nine passes defensed.

Boston was ranked Pro Football Focus’ (subscription required) No. 24 safety last season, but No. 19 safety in pass coverage. Even though Green Bay already signed Adrian Amos a few days ago, the Packers could use a true free safety on the back end of the secondary. Boston fits that bill. He likely wouldn’t cost much and, at 27 years old, appears to be entering the prime of his career. Green Bay would transform their secondary with two new safeties in Amos and Boston.
