Round 2, Pick 59: Julian Love, CB, Notre Dame

The Colts announced that they re-signed cornerback Pierre Desir to a three-year deal, locking up one of their best starters from a year before. Even with Desir re-signed, the Colts will still need help at corner opposite Desir, making this pick even more of a no-brainer.

Julian Love is ranked as a top-five corner in this class, but will still need a decent amount of work to reach his full potential. This is part of why I have him going to the Colts here. The Colts showed just how great of a coaching staff they had in 2018, by turning players no one had heard of into star defensive players.

With proper coaching, Love could develop into a first-round caliber player who only cost the Colts a late second-round pick. Love’s best coverage comes from man-to-man, where he can use his above average ball skills to make plays on the ball and play aggressively. Love intercepted five passes and blocked another away 34 in his three-year career for the Fighting Irish. Love can be a great ballhawk in man-to-man coverage.

Love’s biggest downfall is his zone cover skills. He does not excel here, but that isn’t to say he couldn’t improve with more reps and proper coaching. Regardless of this, he would still be an excellent second-round pick for the Colts with the potential to further improve his game. Love has the upside to be the Colts long-term answer at cornerback opposite Desir.
