Dallas Cowboys: 3 Safety targets in Round 2 of the 2019 NFL Draft
By Randy Gurzi
The Dallas Cowboys need to add depth to the safety position and may look to do so with their second-round pick. If so, here are three names to remember.
Their pursuit of Earl Thomas fell short, which wasn’t too shocking once the details of his new contract came out. The Dallas Cowboys had interest in the former Texas star, but they’re not a team to overspend.
Sure, in the past they did so without a second thought. Owner Jerry Jones was willing to write just about any check in order to get the players he wanted. The problem is, too many times the big moves didn’t pan out. Because of that, this team has a new found philosophy of being frugal — and sometimes it feels like they may have gone too far the other way.
Don’t expect that to change though as Jerry’s son, Stephen Jones, and Will McClay are the ones calling the majority of the shots now. Working alongside head coach Jason Garrett, this trio is no longer dishing out huge deals without considering how it affects their salary cap long term.
While that’s a sound strategy — even if it can be hard to watch — the team needs to make sure they draft well to fill out their rosters. And safety is still going to be a need heading into the 2019 season, even if just for depth.
It also wouldn’t be too surprising to see them target the position with their first pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, which happens to come in Round 2 thanks to the Amari Cooper trade in which they surrendered their first pick.
If they do decide to go after a safety in Round 2, here are three players to remember as potential targets.
