2019 NFL Mock Draft: Post-free agency first wave three-round projection
By Randy Gurzi
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama
While there could be a good argument to move on from Jameis Winston, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers seem content to give him one more shot to prove he’s the guy. While some of his numbers are impressive, the fact is he came into the league with a lot of red flags and was suspended to begin the 2018 NFL season. On top of that, he lost his job twice in that same season to journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick ‚— which should tell you all you need to know.
Even so, the Bucs are going to let the man with a 21-33 career record work with new head coach Bruce Arians for at least this year. Then, they will have to decide if Winston will be their first quarterback to ever receive a second contract.
In an effort to truly evaluate what he can do, Tampa Bay uses this pick on a left tackle in Jonah Williams. The Alabama product took a hit for his play against Clemson, but that shouldn’t define him as a pro.
He still has as much upside as any offensive linemen in this class and can play the most premium position up front. Tampa has to hope him holding off pass rushers helps Winston throw the ball to the team with the same uniform as him.
