D.J. Fluker and Mike Iupati

Cheating a bit and lumping these two together really makes sense given the circumstances. Last year, the Seahawks signed two new starting guards: D.J. Fluker and J.R. Sweezy. While the team did not bring back Sweezy for another go, the Seahawks made Fluker a priority, and then they signed Mike Iupati, making this the second year the team has signed a pair of starting guards.

Head coach Pete Carroll had said he wanted Fluker back for 2019 and things worked out. Fluker signed a two-year deal worth $6 million, according to Spotrac. That’s a great deal for the Seahawks and it lets the team get back one of its best run blockers.

Fluker played a huge role in making the Seahawks the best running team in the NFL during the 2018 season. He was dominant at the line and mauled his way through defenders. My only concern with Fluker is his pass blocking ability. Wilson was sacked a career-high 51 times in 2018. Hopefully, that number will drop in 2019.

Iupati is an interesting signing that’s easy to like. While we only know that he signed a one-year deal and don’t have any set monetary numbers, Iupati made four-straight Pro Bowls between 2012 and 2015. Since then though, he’s fallen off a bit. He missed all but one game in 2017 with injuries and missed six games last season.

He’s also about to turn 32 which could signal an even more intense decline is on its way. However, for a one-year deal, he seems worth the risk.
