Round 3, Pick 90: Johnathan Abram, S, Mississippi State

With the next pick, the Cowboys address their depth issues at safety as they snatch up Mississippi State strong safety Johnathan Abram. The 5-11, 205-pound Abram already met with Dallas during the Combine and he’s got the kind of versatility that the team loves at the position. He also had no problem declaring how many different ways he could help a team.

"“I’m pretty much comfortable wherever you put me: down in the box, out playing man-to-man, in the slots or even at free. … Whatever works for you, I’m going to make it work for me.” — Abram said via Jon Machota of Dallas News"

Abram improved his stock at the Scouting Combine thanks to a good workout. He posted an impressive 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash which is nice to see considering he was seen as a hard hitter than a player with great range. That time suggests he can be both things in the NFL.

The one good thing about missing out on the big safeties in free agency is it could lead to some players at the position sliding slightly in the draft. Abram is a guy who could be a second-round pick, but someone always tends to fall. Whether it’s him, Juan Thornhill, or Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, there’s going to be a player available in the third who has potential to develop into a starter.
