Despite the recent addition of Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Miami Dolphins are still in need of a quarterback upgrade and Colin Kaepernick could be the answer.

After recently trading quarterback Ryan Tannehill to the Tennessee Titans and then signing Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Miami Dolphins seem to already be waving the white flag for the 2019 NFL season. The Dolphins’ front office and coaching staff will likely give the usual spiel about how Fitzpatrick is their guy and how he makes them competitive in 2019. But good luck getting Miami fans to be excited about a quarterback who has never made a playoff start since entering the league in 2005.

Some believe the Dolphins are basically hoping to end up with the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft so that they can select current Alabama signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa. Waiting around for a rookie quarterback may seem like a good plan for Miami’s future. But there is no guarantee that Tagovailoa will even end up with the Dolphins in 2020, so the team should just focus on being as competitive as they can next season.

If Miami is actually interested in being successful in 2019, then they should consider adding someone with more talent than Fitzpatrick under center. Someone by the name of Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick hasn’t taken a snap in the NFL since the final game of the 2016 season and it mainly has to do with his decision to kneel during the national anthem when he was a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

Owners around the league don’t care that he threw 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions in 12 games during his last season. Teams have opted to give awful quarterbacks like Nathan Peterman, Tom Savage and Austin Davis roster spots instead of adding the more talented Kaepernick.

But with the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback’s grievance against the NFL now resolved, perhaps some teams around the league will be more interested in taking a chance on him. Conveniently, Kaepernick is actually interested in playing for the Dolphins next season, according to a recent report. If they’re smart, Miami should have mutual interest in the quarterback this offseason too.

Not only would he be a drastic upgrade over Fitzpatrick, but Kaepernick would give Dolphins fans an actual reason to be excited about 2019. His popularity has soared during his time off the field over the last two years and his Miami jersey would easily fly off the shelves.

Of course, for this to happen, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross would have to approve of signing the quarterback. Ross has said in the past that he is opposed to players kneeling during the anthem and he was actually someone who was deposed in Kaepernick’s grievance against the NFL.

If Ross actually cares about keeping his team competitive though, then he should seriously think about putting his opinions to the side and add the former San Francisco quarterback to Miami’s roster this year.
