Jacksonville Jaguars: What happens if Leonard Fournette gets hurt again?
By Larry Brake
What are the Jacksonville Jaguars going to do if often injured running back Leonard Fournette gets hurt once again in 2019?
Leonard Fournette has a big mission for the upcoming 2019 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has to stay healthy and play a full 16-game schedule. What will happen if Fournette gets hurt or into trouble? Remember, last season, he was suspended because of his actions in Buffalo. He struggled with a nagging hamstring injury throughout the season. Fournette missed eight games in 2017.
Also, he drew the ire of Tom Coughlin because of his lack of professionalism after the Miami game. He had his contract guarantees voided by the Jaguars and Fournette filed a grievance to get them restored. Currently, everything appears to be on the mend between Fournette and the team.
Suppose Fournette gets hurt in a freak accident on a routine play. What will the Jaguars do at running back? As of now, Thomas Rawls and David Williams are the only options, unless you count Dmitri Flowers, a fullback.
Should Jacksonville try to re-sign T.J. Yeldon? How about drafting David Montgomery from Iowa State in the second round? There are two unsigned free agent running backs that could help serve as insurance against another injury suffered by Fournette.
First, Isaiah Crowell is available for the Jaguars. Crowell fits the bill as a power runner. He stands 5-11, weighing 225 pounds. In his career, Crowell has 880 carries for 3,803 yards with 27 touchdowns. He has caught 117 passes for 922 yards. Crowell has played in the NFL since 2014.
Second, Jay Ajayi is looking for a job. He has completed his rookie contract of 2015. Ajayi is built for the power running style by standing 6-0, weighing 223 pounds. In his career, Ajayi has carried the ball 562 times for 2,516 yards with 13 touchdowns. He has caught 63 passes for 419 yards with one touchdown. Ajayi played with Nick Foles in Philadelphia.
Let’s hope that Fournette stays healthy and runs for over 1600 yards. Most of all, history says that he has the propensity to get hurt. Hopefully, the Jaguars have a plan to address that situation, if it happens.
