Round 4, Pick 120: Daniel Wise, DL, Kansas

After drafting their hometown hero in Blake Cashman, the Vikings stay on the defensive side of the ball in round four by selecting Kansas defensive tackle Daniel Wise with the 120th overall pick. With Sheldon Richardson likely walking away in free agency and Linval Joseph turning 31 years old this season, Wise projects as depth for the future.

Wise (6-3, 281 pounds) was named first-team All-Big 12 each of the past two years for his work as both an interior pass rusher and run stuffer. He possesses average athleticism but plays fast and reckless. He will need to add weight if he’s to play inside as a 3-technique (lined up between offensive guard and tackle). Wise has been compared to former Viking Tom Johnson.

"“Wise plays with a low pad level and loose upper body that he uses to slither around blockers and into the backfield, but he can be underwhelming when taking on power. He is a busy-body pass rusher … not always aesthetically pleasing due to inconsistent body control, but the work gets done.” – NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein"

The Vikings recently re-signed Shamar Stephen and still have Jaleel Johnson waiting in the wings along the interior. That said, you can never have enough depth on the defensive line. Wise projects nicely in Minnesota’s scheme.
