Denver Broncos: Is quarterback interest real or a smokescreen?
Dwayne Haskins
My personal favorite quarterback in the 2019 NFL Draft class, Dwayne Haskins is an accurate quarterback that made a living in the intermediate in his one season as a starter for Ohio State.
Quick hits:
- Impressive placement on far-reaching areas of the field in intermediate throws
- Can get a little too flustered under pressure. Pressure in his face brought out the worst in him
- Showed confidence in reading through progressions efficiently
- Willing and able to place the ball with anticipation
- A little too long-strided in his footwork, and can cause the ball to get away from him when not allowed sufficient time
Why he fits:
Haskins is a prototypical pocket passer and pro-style quarterback, despite what some Ohio State system bias may have some think. While he didn’t make a living popping the top off defenses, he is perfectly capable of doing so, and would fit like a glove into the Broncos’ offense.
He is inexperienced and would need the year behind Flacco, but he plays the game the way successful quarterbacks do. He is a pure passer, can make every throw and, I think, has the fewest holes in his game amongst his peers in this class.
Scouting report from The Draft Network:
"Dwayne Haskins projects as a prototypical pocket passer in the NFL. Haskins’ best system fit is an offense that implements a lot of work in the intermediate areas of the field to capitalize on his accuracy to that area and mitigate his longer drops and prolonged reps holding the ball within the pocket. Haskins’ ceiling will be determined by how much more accurate he can get his deep ball and getting his decision making process to speed up. Is not overly effective beating pressure."
Despite not being as buzzy as Murray, Haskins could be a franchise quarterback.
