4. Darnell Savage Jr., S, Maryland

At some point in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys should focus on their safety spot opposite Xavier Woods. No disrespect to Jeff Heath, but he isn’t cutting it — and Kavon Frazier hasn’t shown enough promise.

Darnell Savage has the type of ability to fit ideally in Rod Marinelli’s defense. One might say he’d be an absolute savage. Why? Because he brings versatility and flexibility to the safety spot. One of his best traits is his play in deep zone coverage. He finds the ball and does a great job closing in and does a great job batting passes.

He has solid ball skills and great range. When the ball is in the air, Savage does a solid job breaking up passes. In fact, his 4.38-second 40-yard dash shows the type of athlete he is. He has enough athleticism and fantastic speed to play as a single high safety. But playing alongside Woods means he doesn’t have to do that on an every-play basis.

Moreover, because of his aggressive play and ability to tackle, Savage fits as a box safety. He can also play nickel corner if necessary, making him one heck of a weapon. The 2019 safety class is thin, to say the least. Savage’s stock skyrocketed after the combine.  Still, the Cowboys could target him in the late second, early third round.
